Obesity is now the most common nutritional problem we see in our pets. Obese animals can have a number of weight related illnesses.
When an animal is obese, there is extra stress on the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and other body organs. As a result, overweight animals are more likely to suffer from cardiac disease, respiratory problems, digestive disorders, and high blood pressure.
Additionally, their joints, ligaments, tendons, and bones suffer from excess wear and tear - as a result, they may endure arthritis, joint injuries, leg problems, and back ailments. Overheating, skin disease, and reproductive problems are also common complaints.
Obese animals are prone to life threatening chronic diseases such as diabetes, Cushing’s disease, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), and liver disease such as feline hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver syndrome). In addition, they are at greater risk during anesthesia and surgery.
Baldry Veterinary House Call Services offers pet weight management programs to help you monitor your furry friends weight. This includes a veterinary examination to determine if there is an underlying cause for the obesity, or if there are other medical conditions present. We will provide recommendations regarding exercise and treats, as well as a diet change for your pet.
